Fatal crash in Auckland involving a motorcycle

27 June 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an incident in which a man riding a motorcycle died.

Police spotted a motorcycle being driven above the posted road speed. They signalled the driver to stop, but he sped off.

Police did not pursue as they had been able to read the bike’s registration number and deemed it too dangerous to pursue.

Soon after, the motorcycle was involved in a crash at an intersection, having ridden through a red light. Bystanders were attempting to help the man by the time Police arrived, but he was later confirmed as having died in the crash.

The Police investigation found that the officers who had spotted the speeding motorcycle complied fully with the relevant policy on fleeing drivers. The Authority agrees with this finding.
