Contractor who took Police documents lacked understanding of security requirements

22 August 2024

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation where a person contracted to work for Police in 2023 had sent documents relating to Police data and finances to their own personal email address prior to completing their contract.

Police found the person had retained the documents for reference in their future work, based on an incorrect belief that they were able to do so. Police concluded that the person had not been properly inducted into the role and that they lacked understanding around the security and handling of Police documents. All documents were recovered and/or destroyed and there was no privacy breach to any individual identified. Police reinforced internal messages and systems to reduce the risk of these events occurring in future.

The Authority is satisfied with the standard of the Police investigation and believes Police dealt with the matter appropriately.
