Officer in Auckland unintentionally fires Police pistol

15 January 2024

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an officer carelessly used a firearm.

In February 2023, an officer was using a loaded Glock pistol to practice their firearm drills. The officer was in the muster room at the Police station when they unintentionally pulled the trigger and fired a round through an office window, across an internal carpark, and through an exterior roller garage door. The round was not located.

The criminal investigation found that there was sufficient evidence to charge the officer with careless use of a firearm. However, Police concluded a robust employment process was a proper alternative to a prosecution in the circumstances. Accordingly, the officer was sanctioned for their actions.

The Authority agrees with the outcome of the Police investigation.
