Investigation finds off-duty Police officer fell asleep at the wheel and caused a crash

3 June 2024

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification alleging that a Police officer crashed into another motorist while driving home in an unmarked police car at the end of an extended shift.

The police investigation determined the officer fell asleep at the wheel, then crossed the centre line before colliding with an oncoming vehicle in the opposite lane. The police car was written-off, however no significant injuries were sustained by the occupants of the oncoming vehicle or the officer.

Police charged the officer with careless driving and the officer completed a diversion process resulting in the charge being dismissed. Police then conducted a confidential employment process.

The Authority is satisfied Police took appropriate action.
