The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint alleging that an authorised officer assaulted a detainee while he was in Police custody. The investigation included a review of the custody footage, which showed the detainee standing outside a closed cell door, before the authorised officer approached the detainee from behind and struck him in the head.
Police found the force was unjustified and charged the authorised officer with assault. The officer pleaded guilty and was later discharged without conviction.
Police undertook an employment process, finding the authorised officer’s actions breached the Police Code of Conduct, which resulted in a confidential employment outcome.
The Authority is satisfied with how Police conducted their investigation and dealt with this incident.
