Officer charged with assault after using excessive force to arrest on minor charge

10 February 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an officer used excessive force when arresting a complainant at his home on a minor charge.

There were two concerning uses of force. The first related to an initial struggle at the door of the complainant’s home that included a momentary chokehold. The second occurred after the complainant was handcuffed, when the officer gripped the complainant’s chin.

Following a criminal investigation, Police charged the officer with assault. The officer completed diversion, which included a written apology to the complainant, remedial training and payment of a small amount of reparations. The Authority is satisfied with the Police investigation and prosecution process.

Police further addressed the actions of the officer through an employment process. We are satisfied with the outcome of this.
