Tauranga Police employee accessed Police database for personal reasons

30 January 2025

Police investigated a Police employee’s use of NIA after an audit detected up to 51 instances where checks appeared to be in breach of Police policies and the Code of Conduct.

The checks occurred between 2008 and 2022 and involved accessing and updating information about themselves and family members. The employee also created incident reports for offending committed against two family members.

The investigation concluded that the employee accessed and used the database for private purposes and was therefore in breach of both the Code of Conduct and Values, as well as policies about accessing Police information and managing conflicts of interest.

We agreed with the outcome of the employment process undertaken by Police. However, Police did not follow the agreed consultation process and the Authority did not have the opportunity to oversee the investigation or provide comment on the investigation report before the matter was effectively concluded.
