Off-duty officer sanctioned for disorderly behaviour
Police notified the Authority of an incident in central Christchurch, where CCTV showed an off-duty officer fighting with several unknown men. The officer sustained a broken nose and fractured eye socket during the incident. No formal complaints were made against the officer.
The Authority oversaw Police criminal and employment investigations. Police found there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the officer but did not do so due to public interest considerations. The officer received a formal warning for assault and disorderly behaviour. He was subsequently dealt with through an employment process which resulted in a sanction. The Authority agrees with these outcomes.
