Police officer caused a crash with another car in Auckland City

15 February 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an officer who had pulled out in front of another car causing a crash (no injuries). The officer had just completed a traffic stop with another motorist and had then been called to a priority job. The Police vehicle still had its red and blue flashing lights on and the officer also activated the siren.

While the officer saw the oncoming car, he thought the driver had seen him and was slowing to allow him to pull out. This was not correct, and instead, that car crashed into the driver's door of the Police vehicle.

Taking into consideration the views of the affected motorist and the reason the officer was trying to pull out into traffic, Police decided not to charge the officer and instead have resolved the matter through an employment process. The Authority considers the outcome was fair and appropriate.
