Officer did not cause motorbike rider's accident

26 January 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where it was alleged that a motorbike officer may have contributed to a member of the public coming off his motorbike on State Highway 1 south of Auckland.

At about 5.30pm on Sunday 22 September 2019 the motorbike rider was observed by the officer speeding in slowing traffic and lane splitting. The officer got ahead of the motorbike rider and intended to signal to him to move to the side of the motorway so he could speak to him about his manner of driving. Before this could happen, the motorbike rider braked suddenly and his rear wheel has locked. He collided with a car and suffered a broken left collarbone. It was determined that the officer was about three to four car lengths in front of the motorbike rider and therefore had not contributed to the accident.
