19 December 2024

On 11 April 2024, a man attended a resolution meeting at the Kaitaia Police Station regarding an incident his son had been involved in. During the meeting, the man became frustrated and left. A Police officer escorted the man out of the station. The man pushed the officer who was standing at the top of a flight of stairs. In response, the officer tackled the man, and they both fell down the stairs. The officer arrested the man for disorderly behaviour. Police charged the man with assaulting the officer.

17 December 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were justified in fatally shooting Darren Lyttle following an encounter at Mr Lyttle’s home address in Feilding on 23 April 2023. However, we are of the view that Police command and control of the incident was inadequate and that the use of tactical options in quick succession prematurely escalated the situation.

 

12 December 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police officers breached aspects of Police policy while pursuing a motorcycle in Christchurch on 20 August 2023. The pursuit ended in a fatal crash.

11 December 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer failed to comply with Police ‘Fleeing driver’ policy while pursuing a motorcyclist in Whakatane on 16 March 2024. The motorcyclist fatally crashed a short time after the officer abandoned the pursuit.

3 December 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that the detention and handcuffing of two children in the Napier township on 14 November 2023 was unjustified. We also found that the force used by one of the officers in restraining one of the children within the Oranga Tamariki office was excessive.

21 November 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer used excessive force in fatally shooting Kaoss Price near New Plymouth on 16 April 2022. We have not recommended that Police lay criminal charges against the officer.

14 November 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer was justified in shooting a man to save a woman’s life in Wainuiomata on 16 November 2023.

31 October 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were not justified in shooting at a fleeing armed offender at an intersection in Ellerslie, but were justified in later shooting at him at a property in Hillsborough, Auckland on 30 September 2021. The man sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.

24 October 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police breached aspects of the Fleeing Driver Policy when they pursued a car that crashed and killed a back seat passenger on 17 September 2023. However, their actions were not the cause of the crash.

22 October 2024

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police did not use excessive force while detaining a youth in Whangamatā on Saturday 31 December 2022.

However, the Authority found that Police, although acting in good faith, had no lawful basis to stop the car the youth was travelling in, and did not comply with the provisions of the Local Government Act 2002.
