The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police failed to respond appropriately to an emergency call reporting that a pedestrian had been hit by a car near Benneydale.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority have completed their independent investigation into how Police responded to Ms Farzana Yaqubi’s online reports that a man was threatening, stalking, and harassing her. On 19 December 2022, almost eight weeks after first reporting the matter to Police, the man murdered Ms Yaqubi. At the time of her death, Ms Yaqubi’s complaint file was awaiting investigation.

4 April 2024

On 24 June 2023 at about 6pm, Police arrested a man who was under the influence of methamphetamine. Police took the man to the Auckland Custody Unit (ACU) and called an ambulance to meet them there to assess him. At the ACU, staff noticed that he also had serious injuries. After being advised that an ambulance was going to take some time to arrive, Police drove the man to Auckland Hospital, but he became unresponsive while in the patrol car. An officer started performing chest compressions. Upon arriving at the hospital, medical staff took over emergency care for the man but were unable to resuscitate him.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that officers in Hamilton acted unlawfully in arresting a man in a Hamilton carpark on 10 June 2022.
