From May 2024 our public reports will be either summary reports or longer "full" reports, depending on the nature of the incident or complaint we investigated. Summary reports provide a brief overview of our investigations and our findings, while full reports provide a more comprehensive analysis of the issues we examined and are accompanied by a media statement.

16 May 2024

Police advised the IPCA of an incident at Henderson where an officer had struck a man with his Police vehicle. We found that the use of a weapon of opportunity, in these specific circumstances, was justified under section 48 of the Crimes Act 1961.

14 May 2024

The Authority found that officers were justified in using a sponge round launcher and Police dog to apprehend a man in Palmerston North on 4 May 2023.  The man, who was a high-risk offender, had cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet and absconded from his bail address almost one month earlier and had been evading Police since that time.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found a man was inappropriately charged with a serious sexual assault arising from events in Auckland in October 2019, as a result of an inadequate Police investigation.

4 April 2024

On 24 June 2023 at about 6pm, Police arrested a man who was under the influence of methamphetamine. Police took the man to the Auckland Custody Unit (ACU) and called an ambulance to meet them there to assess him. At the ACU, staff noticed that he also had serious injuries. After being advised that an ambulance was going to take some time to arrive, Police drove the man to Auckland Hospital, but he became unresponsive while in the patrol car. An officer started performing chest compressions. Upon arriving at the hospital, medical staff took over emergency care for the man but were unable to resuscitate him.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were justified in using force to stop and arrest a man escaping from a Police operation in Palmerston North on 26 July 2021.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that officers were justified in shooting Mr Witika outside his burning house in Glen Eden.
