Reports on independent investigations 2024

Read summaries and reports of our investigations here.

From May 2024 our public reports will be either summary reports or longer "full" reports, depending on the nature of the incident or complaint we investigated. Summary reports provide a brief overview of our investigations and our findings, while full reports provide a more comprehensive analysis of the issues we examined and are accompanied by a media statement.

On 11 April 2024, a man attended a resolution meeting at the Kaitaia Police Station regarding an incident his son had been involved in. During the meeting, the man became frustrated and left. A Police officer escorted the man out of the station. The man pushed the officer who was standing at the top of a flight of stairs. In response, the officer tackled the man, and they both fell down the stairs. The officer arrested the man for disorderly behaviour. Police charged the man with assaulting the officer.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were justified in fatally shooting Darren Lyttle following an encounter at Mr Lyttle’s home address in Feilding on 23 April 2023. However, we are of the view that Police command and control of the incident was inadequate and that the use of tactical options in quick succession prematurely escalated the situation.
